Description
brutal killing of George Floyd, I began to question exactly what is “black.” I asked my grandson how to correctly use that term versus “people of color.” He is bi-racial and has always been treated by others as black. Defined, if you will, by his color. He said “people of color” refers to many races whereas “black” refers to people of African descent.
Searching for a way to express my anguish over the tragedy and to process the fear it causes me when I think of my four black grandsons and how vulnerable they are to racial profiling and abuse of power by police, I began to meditate on color as it pertains to inks, my preferred medium, which resulted in experimentation in puddles of intense hues which flowed into and around one another.
In this painting I attempted to contain the inks that comprise the puddle in the middle but they “escaped” and flowed into one another. I had to laugh at the metaphor of real life, how there is no true racial “purity” (thankfully) and that we are all one messy humanity! How to define ‘black?” other than ONE HUMAN race in all it’s glorious diversity!
